Hello all, my name is Dillon Duke from Edmond Ok. I am a senior here at the University of Oklahoma and am majoring in International Security Studies and minoring in Arabic. I am also a 1st class Midshipman here at the Naval ROTC unit at OU and will be commissioning as an officer in May. I actually just got back a few days ago from my Summer Naval training where I was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. It was a fantastic experience to be on 4.5 acres of sovereign and mobile US territory. Earlier in the Summer I studied abroad in Turkey where I travelled the West tip of the country all the way to the far Eastern boarder. After my study abroad experience I can safely say Turkey is one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. The people are super accommodating, the food is divine and the sights are absolutely breathtaking. Some of my hobbies include scuba diving, mountain biking, beer tasting, traveling and long walks on the beach. Speaking of traveling, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to all seven continents as a student ambassador with an organization called People to People. Out of all the places I had the privilege of traveling to I would have to say Antarctica was the most amazing. It's literally almost too beautiful to possibly describe. As for my pets, I have quite the farm. Back home I have four dogs, two potbelly pigs, two horses, a rabbit and nine chickens. It sounds like a handful but they're all family and
I enjoy taking care of them. I have one sister who's a freshman at OSU. She is a stellar soccer player and plays on their soccer team and I love her to death. Thats about it.
Me spearfishing in Cozumel (2014)
I love scuba diving as well. I started when I was 12 and eventually became a master diver. I've also been diving in Cozumel, there is some great diving there. I've never been spearfishing, but have always wanted to try. That's so cool you got to visit Antarctica. I spent 10 days on a glacier in Washington, and it was a very cool experience. I can't even imagine what Antarctica was like.
ReplyDeleteYou have had some great adventures already, Dillon - and I am guessing that your Navy career will be pretty amazing! And all seven continents... WOW! As for Turkey, I share your passion for that place; how exciting that you go to travel across the whole country. I went to Turkey back when I had just graduated from college, and I also had the good fortune to visit Syria a few years ago... which was also an incredible place, so it is heartbreaking to hear the news every day about what the Syrian people are going through. I hope learning about India in this class will be a good contribution to your world knowledge... and, in my opinion, we can never have too much knowledge of the world! Enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteDillon,
ReplyDeleteI am an International Security Studies major as well! I think you are actually in my International activism class. I think it is so cool that you've been to Antarctica. It's so random but I've wanted to go their since I was in middle school and have yet to have gone! Did you do the Journey to Turkey program? I did the Journey to Peru one just last summer and it was an awesome experience. I love to travel and can't wait to more in the future. Good luck with all your endeavors!
Dillon,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your introduction and I'm definitely a little jealous of all the cool places that you've visited. It seems like we have quite a bit in common. Like you, I enjoy travelling and scuba diving, although I have only been a few times and never tried spearfishing. My family also had quite the assortment of animals. We have 3 dogs, a cat, 5 horses, a bearded dragon, and an ever-changing number of cattle. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading more of your work throughout the semester.
Wow, you've had some really cool opportunities! Your major sounds really interesting and meaningful, and it sounds like a good fit for someone who likes to travel a lot. I think it's great that you're learning Arabic too. I'm in a class on the Qur'an right now (religious studies major), and there are several other military students in that class and/or taking Arabic, so they can better understand and serve in the Middle East.
ReplyDeleteYour pet family sounds amazing! I've always loved pets/animals, though I lived in the suburbs so we didn't have room for horses or anything like that. I have dogs back home though, and one cat here with me.
Wow! It's so cool that you've done so much and seen such amazing things! Keep your momentum going! I've always wanted to try scuba diving-- your picture is so cool! I actually heard of People to People in high school, one of my friends went to the Netherlands for a sports trip, and she came back with such amazing stories. I can't even start to imagine the awesome things you would have experienced in Antarctica. Not many people can say they've been there! Great intro, looking forward to reading more of your writing.
ReplyDeleteDillon,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you live quite the interesting life. I also love to travel but I don't have anywhere near the experience that you do. I think it is amazing that you have already been to all 7 continents; I would really like to try and do the same. I'm sure study abroad in Turkey was a great time, I would love to visit. I spent my study abroad in Italy and had a blast. Great getting to know a little bit about you.
Wow, Dillon! You've done so much! I also really love to travel, but don't get to do it much because of my commitments here and lack of money. How was being a student ambassador? Not many people get to say they did that! Also, it's really neat that you like so many outdoorsy activities. I like hiking and love swimming. I've always wanted to go scuba diving but haven't had the opportunity yet. That picture is awesome, I bet you had an amazing experience! Also, a lot of my friends from high school went into the navy, and it's wonderful that you're enjoying it. Congratulations on being so close to achieving officer status!
ReplyDeleteLast thing, I promise. What do you want to do with your major?
It was awesome getting to read about you! I can tell you're a pretty cool guy!
Wow. All I can say is WOW. You've been to all seven continents?! That's insanely awesome! And the amount of traveling experience you've garnered must mean you have a ton of great stories to tell; I hope I get to read about some over the course of the semester.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the variety of pets you do. . . Dogs, horses, pigs, chickens--all of them sound like they would be great companions in different ways. I am totally jealous.
Then there's the fact that you're going into the navy, which is admirable. My sister is planning on going into the army, and I know that there is a lot of hard work involved. But I also know that the military can be a very rewarding career experience, so I wish you the best of luck! I cannot wait to read more of your posts over the semester!
Dillon, you sound like such a cool guy! I bet Turkey was AMAZING! I actually looked into the Journey to Turkey program for the summer, but ended up studying abroad in China instead, it was absolutely the best time of my life. I think it is awesome that you are in ROTC here, one of the students that traveled to China with me this summer was in ROTC as well and he told me all about it, so I can definitely appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that takes! My absolute dream would be to travel to all of the continents, so I think it is so cool that you go to do that. Not many people get to say they have done that. Your hobbies sound like a blast as well!
ReplyDeleteDillon, its great to meet you! I enjoyed reading your Introduction and getting to finally know whom you are! I am jealous that you have been to Turkey, I have never been and I have always wanted to go. I heard their food is the bomb! Well, it was great knowing you and I hope to read more of your writing soon!
ReplyDeleteDillion, it's really nice to meet you! That is really cool that you're in the Navy and will be a commissioned officer when you graduate. I have a brother who is a Lt. Commander and XO on a nuclear submarine, so I'm glad you decided to go the Naval route. The Navy is the prefect place for someone who loves to scuba dive too! Sounds like you've had an incredible experience in school so far! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHey, Dillon! Wow- your life is super interesting! Where to even begin… it’s super cool that you traveled to all 7 continents- I didn’t think Antarctica would have much besides ice, but after reading what you said, I’m definitely intrigued and am going to look more into it. Also, congrats on making it to your senior year- you’re almost done! I hope your sister is enjoying OSU- my sister is a freshman also and I am graduating as well. Hopefully you can visit Turkey again and it’s great to have you in the class.
ReplyDeleteHi Dillon!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you really have it all figured out! Your intro was very interesting, you've done a lot of cool things so early in life!
That's awesome you've chosen the Navy route, and congrats! I admire you for all you're doing. Good luck with everything!
Also- I love love love animals so I am so jealous of your farm.
Good to get to know you!
Hi Dillon! It's nice to meet you! First off, I just want to say thank you for choosing to serve our country! I think that is very commendable and people like you are why I am proud to be an American!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing that you have been able to travel to the seven continents! That is near the top of my bucket list, so hopefully I will be lucky enough to be able to do that as well!
My fiance scuba dives, but I was too scared to get certified! Believe it or not, the whole giant step thing really freaked me out! But I have seen some pretty amazing pictures from when he went scuba diving in Cozumel!
I'm also pretty jealous of your farm! I actually would love to live out in the country someday and have a farm with horses, pigs, dogs, and chickens too!
Hey Dillon, super job!
